Well what a day this has been, picked up my new car at the start of the bank holiday weekend, had some great weather, relaxed on bank holiday Monday before coming into work today to find 6 servers have been compromised.
Its a target affair of course but I geuss leading the SEO field does keep you in the spotlight, it was a little frantic for a few hours but all has settled down now. Had a dissapointing afternoon too after learning that we didnt get the Home Retail Group pitch, I was so confident on that one.
Of course we have seen the work of some SEO agencies at first hand and so I will watch progress with a close eye to see what is done to improve two very sorry websites.
On a better note we took position one for two huge money terms, generic terms that demand a premium price and have a large natural search volume each month. We had been close for a couple of months but of course it is not easy to nail financial terms associated with loans.
Its strange how less stressed I get over issues such as today, before being ill I would have fretted and been on edge even after the problem was rectified. This time its different, I guess having faith in the team around me plays a big part and our policy of employing top developers and then teaching them SEOmeans there are greater minds than mine that we are able to rely on. In addition my illness has certainly put some things into perspective and whilst I always have appreciated the simple things in life I feel there is extra clarity now.
The hack was a simple affair which is lucky as many are not, a leaked passward and user probably from a compromised laptop allowed and ftp access and the script to change Index and default pages etc. It was a couple of hours work for us to clean up the mess though we will not get to know who the culprit was.
Changing of passwords etc is the order of the day now to clamp down security.
What will tomorrow bring I wonder….
