Silicon Iron

Silicon Iron – Manufacturing is alive and well.

Well silicon iron is an amazing material, I know this because I recently spent some time at a company called SG Magnets where they manufacture components made from silicon iron.

I think the most refreshing part of my visit was the realisation that manufacturing in Britain was still alive and well and in fact with SG magnets it is thriving. With exports all over the world and over 100 staff it is a vibrant company full of expertise and a forward thinking management team.

My visit enabled me to see the manufacturing process at first hand, I was invited by a friend of my wife who works there, it took me back to the days when I left school and did my engineering apprenticeship at the Colchester Lathe Co.

Anyway I found out what an amazing product Silicon Iron is, if you take car braking systems for example the ABS system has these small magnets and because braking systems are so important SG Magnets has to ensure their Silicon Iron components have zero defects. Now that is pretty amazing for a product, zero defect manufacturing, it is a long way from when I first started my engineering apprenticeship thats for sure.
