Well after 13 years in the SEO business I can honestly say its been a bumpy ride, my SEO career has seen all of the major Google updates and a myriad of non major updates. I started as an SEO Consultant before anybody was even using Google and the early years were what we call the ‘easy years’.
Since then Google has risen to rule search traffic and SEO is more complex than ever and littered with affiliate spam, black hat software rules and wordpress blogspam is a big driver.
My journey has seen me work with my first client who sold crabs to restaurants in Cromer to a corporate portfolio including companies such as Haart (number 1 for estate agents) Sony and Lloyds TSB.
SEO is a subjective business with many different interpretations, consultants vary in their interpretation of SEO logic and experiences and success rates can vary incredibly. The bottom line though is most SEO strategies that are successful are plain, simple and common sense.
SEO is made out to be complex and full of mystique, consultants love buzz words and a greying of the subject but if this is your experience then you should consider your choice of consultant or SEO agency, success should be quick and some progress quicker still, of course there can be problems when code is poor or functionality for SEO is not in a CMS, but this is usually obvious and so the client should be suitably informed as far as expectations go.
