Well I guess I should know better, after all I have worked in this sphere for 12 years, I am on my fourth laptop and the accumulated data for ten years sits on it. Of course I have online backup at work but I overlooked my portable data that lives on my laptop.
You guessed right – my laptop is dead and now I am in a bit of a panic, much of my work data I have on the work system because I regularly VPN into work to share it but its the personal stuff that I am worrying about. Photos that go back for years, some of the mill that I am renavating in France, some of my fishing expediditions with my boys, some of my first days with Catherine my wife and even a few of the wedding.
Of course this will fall on some hapless individual at work whereby I turn up, present the laptop and say – fix it! Yes that is a little unfair but then I am the boss and am allowed to be a little unfair
If he retrieves the data there will be a eureka moment where I hug him and make him part of my family but sooner or later there will be fallout. The fallout will be when I get over the shock of losing my data and search out which of my children used the laptop to download the trojan from Instant Messenger or Hotmail that well know online breeding ground for virus delivery.
You see IM and Hotmail have always been banned from my laptops and I never ever had a problem, it led me into a false sense of security thinking that because I am sensible I can never be caght out, I always know what to spot and downloading online data from these risky places won’t happen and so backup is not needed.
There is a reckoning coming and some major washing of sleek German automobile architecture, that means the 911 is going to be gleaming for months all I need is to be able to access the laptop and discover the culprit, non where is that unfortunate employee………..

Hmm… I read blogs on a similar topic, but i never visited your blog. I added it to favorites and i’ll be your constant reader.
